Golden Delicious:Great fresh, and good cooking apple.Crisp, clean, juicy flesh. Sweet and mild flavor. Red Delicious:Great fresh eating apple.Fine textured, sweet, and aromatic.Flesh is a bit too firm for easy cooking. Mutsu Crispin:Excellent fresh eating and good cooking apple.Very juicy textured flesh.When cooked it holds its shape well. Cameo:Great for fresh eating or cooking.Crisp, tangy flesh. Autumn Gala:Best eaten fresh.Crisp, sweet, and aromatic. Ida Red:Good fresh eating and cooking apple.Firm, crisp, and juicy with a pleasant, sweet flavor.

Mix apples for the best pies.Go heavy on Cortland and light on Macintosh, with another variety or two mixed in.Most pie recipes call for 4–5 lbs. of apples.
