On Thursday, November 8, 2012, Sweet Berry Farm played host to The Aquidneck Land Trust Speaker Series, featuring Robert A. Carrellas, MD, speaking on “Nature as Nurterer: Protecting Land to Protect Our Health.”
Dr. Carrellas, a respected local physician and Aquidneck Land Trust Trustee, helped participants understand nature as nurturer, using various medical studies and initiatives to illustrate how protecting land helps protect our health. In brief, if you are concerned about your health, there is something far more important and basic to it than a new gym membership, superfood smoothies, running shoes, and lycra tights: a healthy environment. A healthy mind, body, and spirit require clean air, clean water, fresh foods, natural beauty, outdoor exercise, and a communing with nature. Land protection helps secure all these, so that we can live a healthier existence.
This presentation was made possible through a collaboration between the Land Trust, Dr. Carrellas, and Sweet Berry Farm. Light refreshments were provided at this event,which was free and open to the public.

Sweet Berry Farm co-owner Jan Eckhart, a representative of the Rhode Island Agricultural Partnership, introduced its new Five-Year Strategic Plan during Rhode Island Agriculture Day at the State House, sponsored by the Department of Environmental Management to recognize the importance of RI’s $100+ million agriculture industry, Thursday, May 12, 2011, 11:30am–6pm. Hundreds of attendees enjoyed samples of RI-grown food products, including Susanna’s Ice Cream and Sorbet (French Vanilla Bean and Crème Brûlée Ice Creams and Rhubarb Sorbet) and Bumbleberry Jam from Cory’s Kitchen at Sweet Berry Farm.
The next day Sweet Berry Farm played luncheon host to Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs at the US Department of Agriculture Edward Avalos, together with Rhode Island dignitaries, as they began a tour of Rhode Island farms to learn first hand about RI’s agriculture industry.
